The school is one of the most important institutions in our society and one building that bears some of our warm memories.  It also has a vast effect in our lives, in our personalities and our views and perceptions of the world.  That’s why we should make school repair and maintenance a regular activity.

We should team up to make the school a productive place of learning and that implies the roofs are not trickling, the paint are not peeling off the walls and ceilings, the drains are not blocked, the gym roof is not leaking, the showers have warm water when you want it, and everything is going well.  To put it plainly, excellent education is now related with the condition of the facilities and building.  Do you expect students to learn well when the walls look like a mosaic and the rooms are in very poor shape?  Do you count on students to study scientific theories and principles when the laboratories are not completely operational and may not be even safe for experiments?  These kinds of learning environments will generate low quality education. 

That’s why the government should work directly with school officials to make school maintenance and repair a main concern in legislative and budget discussions.  There must be a budget for this undertaking.  However, it is a sad truth that most state representatives and public government agencies are not so eager in making this investment into our future.  We have to hit the road pronto if we wish to produce dependable and decent citizens in the future.  And that starts by standing up to the challenges of our school system and to the value of education we are forced to face.  Let us not forget that the students today will be the next group of leaders, experts, and personnel.  It is our task to give them excellent education today.  Besides, it is the government’s responsibility to ensure that there is adequate subsidy for restoration and repair.  It is high time that we make ourselves be heard and make sure our kids are provided the finest in education.

Not only are our schools affected by deterioration but so are other structures and buildings in our country today.  Historical buildings, houses and other offices are as well in poor condition and severely need some renovation.  Church restoration and repair is different from making repairs for school buildings.  Churches are not just religious places but also accommodate a number of the most priceless pieces of art.  An illustration of such repair was the refurbishment of the Sistine Chapel, and you can actually notice the change before and after the cleaning of the ceilings and the frescos.  It is our responsibility now to conserve the past and guarantee that the future is bright for our children.
