Learning Japanese is an extremely wise move as the opportunities for employment and relationships you may never have had opens up to you.

learning to speak Japanese is actually not that difficult really, for a number of reasons. One being the absense of tough anad confusing glides that we have in English. A glide is where you start a vowel sound and then change it as you pronounce it. For example listen to yourself say the word: “Go”, it sounds like “go-oh” as we drag the “o”.

The Japanese don’t do this and all there sounds are exactly how they are written, where as in English our vowels can be pronounced in a variety of ways, for example the word “eye” is pronounced “I” and this is confusing for people learning English because when they see the another word with the vowel “e” it can sound completely different, for example “pen”.

Within the language is a form of speech called ‘keigo’, this differentiates between the polite form and the informal way of speaking, therefore certain words change depending on who’s being addressed. One simple example is when you greet a teacher in the morning you say ‘ohayo gozaimasu’ however if you greet a friend you would say a more informal phrases lie ‘ohayo’.The formation of the correct verb to your when speaking depends on the social status of the person that you are talking to.

Another aspect of the Japanese language that is obvioulsy important is the writing system. There are three main writing scripts called Kanji, Katakana and Hiragana. Kanji is made up of a total of 1945 symbols and was borrowed from the Chinese language many centuries ago.
