It does so by training your eyes and brain to read sentences at a time instead of words. There are a number of courses available, and one of the best known is Evelyn Wood. If you are employed in a profession where it is important that you read and assimilate large numbers of tracts, then you would find speed reading of immence help.

Speed reading is not something which comes automatically. You need to put in the effort to learn to speed read. Rather than reading individual words, the technique is to recognise groups of words. Step-by-step you then progress on to read sentences, and then paragraphs at a time.You also have to train the brain to remember the content of the article, since it is of little use to read fast without comprehension or retention. Obviously speed reading cannot be learned by those who do not first have a good normal reading ability. Poor readers should not even comtemplate learning to speed read.

You can see that should you be in a profession where a great deal of informatiion has to be read, understood and assimilated, this skill will rapidly shorten the amount of time you spend reading documents and this could easily lead you advancement in your chosen career. 

Proponents of speed reading will tell you that even if you only read for enjoyment then you will find that speed reading would help you to enjoy this more.  I cannot really accept that suggestion. You really want to absorb the nuances of the writing style when reading for enjoyment. The whole concerpt of speed reading precludes recognizing the finer subtleties underlying the words. I believe you would lose much of the authors’s intent even though you would get the meaning and general concept of the piece. When reading classics such as Charles Dickens and William shakespear, this is especially true. It is often the words themselves that carry a piece and not just the storyline. Once you have learned speed reading, it is difficult to read in any other way.

So before you embark on a speed reading course, look carefully at why you are doing so. Before you take that leap you should gather as much information as you can (by reading normally. Ensure that you will really benefit from speedreading, and that it not take away your enjoyment of reading in the longer term.
