Child development, from babyhood to man/womanhood is influenced by particular factors such as family, community, environment and media. These factors are responsible for the things like how they perceive the world, how they relate with the society and how they see their inner self or their own identity.

It is interesting to note that children exhibit various behaviour day after day and learn things around him/her more quickly . But unknowingly, they go through sensational changes, which more often than not, are ignored or paid with very little attention.

Theories Contributory to Child Development

There are many theories casual to child development psychology. The following are but a few of the theories that give a structure on human growth and development as well as learning:

•Theory of Psychosexual Development. According to Sigmund Freud, personality development is a series of stages wherein a child seeks enjoyment on certain erogenous areas. These stages are the Oral, the Anal, the Phallic, the Latent Period, and the Genital.

Freud stressed that a child who successfully completed these stages will have a healthy personality. However, if a particular point is not addressed at the right stage, fixation or the recurrence of prior psychosexual stage may occur . Until the resolution of the conflict, it would be hard for the concerned person to move on.

•Theory of Psychosocial Development. The theory of psychosocial development is the development of ego or self identity which is acquired from social interaction . Erik Erikson cited that self identity changes constantly since of current experiences and information gained from day to day co-mingling with others. Further, he believed that competency is the moving factor behind motivated behaviors and actions.
