Arizona is home to the Desert Schools Federal Credit Union. It has over 60 branches around the state and offers personal services such as home loans, savings accounts, auto loans, credit cards, insurance, investment and retirement plans, school loans and even loans for building pools and purchasing recreational vehicles. The credit union also has a variety of offerings for companies like rotating lines of credit, and even ways for businesses to work to gather with other businesses were members of the credit union.

Credit unions and banks offer somewhat different services. Desert Schools Federal Credit Union is like a bank but not like a bank. People who deposit money into banks do not own them, but people who put their money into credit unions are the owners. This means that with banks the profits go to the investors and stock holders while the credit unions are non profit. Credit union profits are reinvested into the business in the form of lower interest rates on loans and higher dividends on investments. As far as FDIC insurance that guarantees accounts, federal credit unions are no different from banks.

Credit unions offer much more personalized service than do banks. Credit unions are generally involved with some business or organization. That is the case with the Desert Schools Federal Credit Union which was started by teachers who wanted their money to work harder for them. More on that later. Credit unions treat people less like account balances and more like human beings. Owners are really the focus of both institutions, but at credit unions the account holders happen to be the owners.

Now a history lesson. The Desert Schools Federal Credit Union began with 15 investors who each put in five dollars plus a $.15 membership fee. It grew to assets of $982.72 in only six months, with membership swelling to 54 people. By the time WW2 ended in 1945, it had grown to 225 people and over $9000 in assets. The credit union didn’t hire its first employee until 1947. Annis King worked part time in an office about the size of a closet. Her duties were performed, of course, without aid of the modern computer. There was huge growth by 1999 -$1.3 billion in assets and 200,000 members.
